這一座森林保留地位於1號公路Taihape 北邊17公里處,停車場就在路邊,有DOC的標示牌.從這裡翻越農場的門,越過農場往下走到一條小溪,仔細尋找一座單人吊橋(因為marker 都被移除,所以要耐心尋找 ).過了吊橋以後,是一片沼澤地,還好現在是乾季,走起來並不困難.這時必須找到DOC的橘色三角形marker,往那方向越過滿是露水的一片農場雜草.30分以後到marker處才是步道開始.
一開始是低海拔的紐西蘭原生樹林,有許多又老又大的totara,接近山頂整片的mountain cedar 與 totaro 爭高搶陽光,所以這一座樹林的特色是樹木特別高大,尤其mountain cedar 比其他地區的要高.爬上三角點,是一個平台,這裡的視野遼闊,可以看到整片的mountain cedar 樹林和Mt Ruapehu.從三角點以後開始下坡到一個溪谷,Zekes Hut 就在溪谷裡的荒煙蔓草中,在這裡只聽到吵雜的cuckoos聲音,完全與世隔絕,可以享受荒野的感覺.我們在這一間四個床位的小山屋吃完午餐就回頭.一路與雜草奮鬥,真可謂披荊斬棘,回到carpark雖然覺得有些累,但是頭腦好像變清楚一些,因為整天的荒野探索給了腦袋新生力量.
The large Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary contains a fine example of the montane forest typical of wetter mountain areas such as this.Of particular renown is its stands of pahautea (native cedar) and Hall’s Totara,Zekes Hut is in the Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary which lies between Taihape and Waiouru. Travelling north, access to the track is off SH1 on the right beginning at a DOC sign about 17 km north of Taihape.
From the carpark, the track heads across farmland, walk for 30 mins, to entry of Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary. uphill into native lowland forest. then mountain cedar forest, a lot of ancient giant mountain cedar here. about 2 hrs to reach Hihitahi Trig at 1116m, nice Mt Ruapehu view at the trig. another 1 hr downhill to Zekes Hut, The current hut was built to replace the old 3 bunk hut in 2007 and is located about 200m past the site of the old hut. It sleeps 4 and has a wood stove.
